Emergency Plumbing Problems That Cannot Wait

A burst pipe or major leak

Water moving where it should not is the most common true emergency, and the most expensive when ignored. A burst supply line under pressure can release gallons every minute, soaking subfloors, warping hardwood, and feeding mold inside walls.

The first move is always the same: shut off the water. Stop the source, then worry about the rest. If you can reach the local valve under the affected sink or behind the toilet, use it; if not, head straight for the main.

Older Bloomington homes with aging galvanized or cast-iron pipe are especially prone to sudden failures at corroded joints, and a cold snap along the I-10 corridor can finish off a pipe that was already on its way out. Once the water is off, call for emergency plumbing. Catching a burst line quickly is the difference between a repair and a renovation.

The smell of gas

This one is not about water at all, and it is the most serious problem on this list. If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur near a gas appliance, or hear a faint hissing, treat it as a life-safety emergency.

Do not flip switches, light anything, or use your phone inside. Get everyone out of the house, then call from outside — your gas utility's emergency line first, then a plumber for gas line repair once it is safe.

Gas leaks are rare, but they do not give second chances. When in doubt, leave first and ask questions from the driveway. There is no overreacting to the smell of gas.

Sewage backing up into the house

When wastewater comes up through a floor drain, tub, or toilet, it is both a health hazard and a sign that something is seriously blocked downstream. Raw sewage carries bacteria you do not want in your living space.

Stop using all water right away — every flush and faucet makes the backup worse. Keep people and pets away from the contaminated area, and avoid touching the water without gloves.

A whole-house backup usually points to the main sewer line, not a single fixture. In our area, that often traces back to tree roots invading the line or grease and debris choking an older clay pipe. That calls for prompt professional help to clear and inspect the line. This is not a plunger situation; it is a stop-everything-and-call situation.

A leaking or failing water heater

Losing hot water is miserable, especially on a cold morning, but it is not technically an emergency. A leaking tank is.

If you see water pooling around the base of the heater, the tank may be corroding through — and in our generally hard water, sediment and scale wear tanks out faster than people expect. A failing tank can dump dozens of gallons at once.

Shut off the water supply to the unit and, for a gas heater, the gas as well. Then call about water damage plumbing repairs and a heater assessment. A small puddle today can become a flooded garage overnight.

How do you tell an emergency from an annoyance?

A simple test: does the problem cause active damage or danger right now? If yes, it is an emergency. If it can sit overnight without getting worse, it can wait for a scheduled visit.

Emergencies: burst pipes, gas smell, sewage backups, a flooding water heater, no water at all to the house.

Can usually wait: a single slow drain, a dripping faucet, a running toilet, one fixture acting up while the rest work fine.

When you are unsure, it is fine to call and describe what you are seeing. Talking it through beats guessing wrong on a problem that spreads.

What to do while you wait for the plumber

Once you have made the call, a few steps limit the damage:

• Shut off the water — at the fixture if you can, at the main if you cannot
• For gas, get out first and shut off only if it is safe to reach the valve
• Move valuables, rugs, and electronics away from any water
• Mop or towel standing water to slow it spreading into other rooms
• Take a few photos for your insurance before cleanup
